Vol. 1                                                                                June 1, 2002                                                                                    No. 2

Fifty one years ago March 25, 51 John L. Smith arrived in the state of Utah and days later the First Southern Baptist Church, Clearfield , Utah was organized with 29 members.

Property was purchased and a small building was erected.

Smith, his wife and young family, two girls and a boy, moved into a three room house next door.

For seventeen years the Smith's lived in Utah , pastoring there in Clearfield , between Salt Lake City and Ogden , near Hill Air Force Base, with which most of their members were connected.

Smith produced a daily radio broadcast in Ogden and other nearby stations which he called "An Invitation to Believe" for seventeen years.

For another eight years he presented regular weekly radio programs over different radio stations in the Northern Utah and Central Utah areas.

Knowing practically nothing of Mormonism when they arrived, he soon began the collection of a large library on the subject, made regular visits to the Temple grounds in Salt Lake City , traveled for 23 days with Brigham Young University 's " LDS Church - History Study Tour."  visiting practically every point of historical interest to Mormonism to Vermont , New York state, Kirtland , Ohio , Nauvoo , Illinois , several points in Missouri and other points of interest to Mormons and back to Salt Lake City .

By now an avid student of Mormonism, Smith (no relation to Joseph Smith) continued his studies and over the years and became quite a student of Mormonism.

About 1968, Smith moved back to Oklahoma where he had grown up, but continued his studies, speaking engagements, writing, etc., finally writing 10 books, several of which were reprinted as many as five to ten times, with from 2,000 to 10,000 per printing.

Today, Smith lives in Marlow , Oklahoma his home-town, and continues his writing, publishing and speaking ministry.  For years he published the Utah Evangel which for a time went to as many as 80,000 addresses a month.  He and his wife Inez traveled up to 322 days of the year in different recreational vehicles - speaking (on Mormonism) more than 7,000 times in 44 states including Alaska and Hawaii and Old Mexico (he made these last trips by air) doing his best to present the message that God had laid upon his heart.

Today Smith maintains an office on Main Street in Marlow (between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth ) and still publishes a tabloid paper that he calls The Newsletter which he sends to nearly 6,000 addresses a month.

Smith is committed to the task that God has laid on his heart.

He is most knowledgeable on the subject upon which he speaks.  He has spoken as many as 377 times in a year, from coast to coast and  Chicago to Houston .

He believes that Mormonism is a cult.  It meets all the qualifications of a cult.

It has a human leader, it has its own book of scripture, it is work-oriented, it teaches that Christ is not enough, one needs a prophet, and it grows largely by proselytizing, (convincing people to leave their churches and become Mormon)..

It does not seek the unchurched, but its main effort is finding already sincere, moral, hard working and people, and telling  them that Christ is not enough.  They need a prophet!

Comprising about 70 percent of the people Utah , today they are branching out.  They have their own books of scripture, they believe polygamy is a more just principle than monogamy though they are not practicing it now, but about 30,000 people in Utah are practicing it and only one man has been convicted of the crime in almost 50 years.

Mormonism teaches that the Bible is not a dependable book of scripture, they believe marriage performed in one of their 100 and more temples may continue in heaven where men may have hundreds of wives, but women can have only one husband.
