Plural Marriage
by John L. Smith

The average income of Hildale residents is under the federal poverty level. Colorado City, Utah, just across the state line, has 61 percent in this category.

Utah outlawed polygamy in 1896. However, "Utah law enforcement agencies do not prosecute" those engaged in its practice. Why? "Utah Chief Deputy Attorney General Reed Richards says, "We've got better things to do!"

Mormons make up over 76 percent of the population of Utah (Deseret News 1995-1996 (LDS) Church Almanac, pg. 417). Arizona has about the third highest percentage of LDS members in the country.

I waited for someone to speak up, so after about the third time she asked, I spoke up, "Is polygamy still taught in the Temple Ceremony?" Of course she responded, "No!"

However, several Mormon prophets continued to live in polygamy and to even perform plural marriages long after the Manifesto.
